Funding Green Upgrades Gets Easier, Demonstrating the Strong Appetite for San Francisco Office Buildings

The return on environmental retrofitting in San Francisco has grown in recent years, sparking competition between developers to make the city’s office buildings more sustainable. Energy Star Logo

The market shift aligns with the conclusions of a Morgan Stanley report released in late March, which found that the region could collectively save roughly $51.2 million per year in utility costs if its structures were made just 10 percent more energy efficient. New financing programs and an uptick in commercial loan allowances for green retrofits have enabled reductions in energy costs and water usage, as well as air quality improvements.
