Number of Employed San Franciscans Sets New Record for Second Time This Summer

The number of San Franciscans with jobs reached a new high last month, surging past a previous record set earlier this year.

The state Economic Development Department said there were 470,800 employed city residents in July, slightly more than the 466,900 people employed in June.

The employment highs set this year have pushed past previous records set during the dot-com frenzy of the early 2000s. At that time the number of employed San Franciscans hit a high in December 2000 with 465,500 people.

The tallies include people who live in San Francisco and may work in the city or elsewhere.

The city’s unemployment rate ticked up in July to 4.9 percent from 4.6 percent in June due to an increase in the size of the city’s labor force.

The state unemployment rate is 7.4 percent and the national unemployment rate is 6.2 percent.
