San Francisco’s manufacturing industry includes a mix of companies that’s as eclectic as the people who live here.
Our new Top 25 list ranks San Francisco-based manufacturers by the number of local employees. It highlights a range of products including artisan ceramics, leather mittens, ukuleles, green futons, desktop 3D printers, silk-screened T-shirts, and of course, the ubiquitous messenger bag.
Clothing and furniture companies dominate the list. Of the top 25 companies, ten produce apparel, bags and accessories. Furniture makers were the second biggest group, with six companies. Overall, the companies varied widely in size, with employee counts ranging from 70 to three.
“The talent pool in the Bay Area is one of the benefits to manufacturing in the city,” said Craig Dalton, CEO at Dodocase Inc. (No. 8). The manufacturer of handmade cases and sleeves for tablets and phones has been in business since 2010.
“Having access to the wealth of craftsmen that call San Francisco home is a huge benefit to any local manufacturer,” added Dalton.
In addition, to its talent pool, San Francisco is also known for leading the country in green initiatives, including sustainable furniture manufacturing practices.
